Installation

Laid to sit flat and stay flat.

A hardwood floor fails for boring reasons: wood that was not acclimated, a subfloor that was not flat, or fasteners spaced to save time. We spend the effort where it does not show, because that is where floors are actually won or lost.

How we approach it

Hardwood Floor Installation, start to finish.

New oak floor with a herringbone inlay and border at the front entry

Kansas City humidity swings hard between August and January. Wood moves with it. Boards that go down at the wrong moisture content gap in winter or buckle in summer — and the floor looked perfect on install day, which is why nobody connects the two.

So the wood sits in your house before it goes down, with the HVAC running the way you actually live. We check moisture in the boards and the subfloor before starting, not as a formality.

Subfloor prep is the other half. Flattening, fastening down squeaks, and correcting height at doorways and appliances happens before the first board, because none of it can be fixed afterward.

What your quote covers

No line items invented later.

Everything here is priced into the written estimate you approve before we start — not added to the invoice afterward. What changes from one floor to the next is what it needs and what you choose.

  • Help choosing solid or engineered for your specific rooms
  • Wood acclimated in your home before installation
  • Moisture readings on boards and subfloor
  • Subfloor flattening and squeak correction
  • Removal and disposal of the existing floor
  • Transitions, thresholds and shoe molding
  • Final walkthrough with you, room by room

Is this the right service?

When it fits, and when it does not.

Installation makes sense when

  • There is no hardwood there today, or what is there is beyond saving
  • You want a different species, width or board direction
  • Carpet, tile or vinyl is coming out
  • A remodel is opening up the floor plan anyway

We will tell you to refinish instead when

  • The existing floor is solid and has sanding life left
  • The problem is finish wear, not the wood itself
  • Budget matters and the current floor is structurally fine
  • You are selling soon and want the visual result for less

What it costs

Ranges, not surprises.

Most installs are $2 to $4 per square foot for labor. What moves that number is the floor itself — board width and length, glued or nailed, prefinished or unfinished. The wood or LVP and the supplies that go with it are yours to buy, which keeps the bigger half of the budget in your hands.

  • Old floor removal $1.50–$2.50 /sq ft, more for tile
  • Unfinished wood, sanded and finished on site $3–$6 /sq ft
  • Herringbone or chevron Up to $15 /sq ft, install alone
  • Stairs, base shoe and trim Per step, quoted separately

Most projects start around 300 sq ft. Whatever your floor turns out to need, you get the whole thing in writing before we start.

Common questions

About hardwood floor installation.

Solid or engineered hardwood — which should I choose?

Solid hardwood can be refinished many times and lasts generations, but it moves with humidity and should not go below grade.

Why does new wood have to sit in my house before installation?

Wood expands and contracts with the moisture in the air around it. Boards delivered from a warehouse are not at the same moisture content as your house.

Can new hardwood go over my existing floor?

Sometimes it works, sometimes removing the old floor is the better call — we do both, depending on your project.

My floor has gaps in winter. Is something wrong?

Usually not. Heated indoor air in winter is dry, wood gives up moisture, and boards shrink. The gaps typically close again in summer.
